The Energy Department Thursday shifted control of the environmental program designed to clean up four radioactive Town of Tonawanda waste sites linked to the Manhattan Project from the Department of Energy in Tennessee to the Army Corps of Engineers in Buffalo.

The move also includes waste sites in Lewiston and South Buffalo, as well as Luckey and Painesville, Ohio.

The federal government earlier this year decided to shift the work of the Department of Energy's Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) to the Defense Department's Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) program run by the corps.
