CHUCK AND ALICE OR BONNIE AND CLYDE?

TONAWANDA NEWS 06/23/99
Letters
By Frank S. Annunziata

One would hope that the recent actions of Mayor Alice Roth, and Legislator Chuck Swanick, the Bonnie and Clyde of local government, will at least raise some eyebrows in Tonawanda, the City.

I guess they must have been absent that day in politics school, where they would have learned they were the servants of the people, not the masters.

If Mr. Swanick thinks he can't win no matter what he does, I strongly suggest he do nothing, it will be at least cheaper for the taxpayers.

When you look at the few, who were turned away, along with the media, who could have acted as a messenger to those not in attendance, one could only assume the worst.

I have talked about summits of understanding in government. I urge the council to step forward in a bipartisan effort and launch an open hearing for the people, who have more at stake than the learned mayor, and Legislator. I also urge them to put forth the courage to censure these two officials for their shoddy treatment of the people they are sworn to serve.

Most of all I ask the council to find the ways and means necessary to return this government, back to the people. If government stops serving the people, there can only be anarchy. This is more than trying to hide something. This is telling you all, "Take a hike!"

SOUNDOFF 06-23-99

•I don't know who is at fault, Dorothy Watson or the TONAWANDA NEWS. Twenty-seven times she wrote "What are they trying to hide? Why the secrecy? What are they afraid of?" Is just a little too much. Calling this letter redundant is putting it mildly.

(Editor’s note: Mrs. Watson wrote the letter that way. I let is run as written because I thought she was using an alliterative device to try and slam her point home. Apparently, as you see it, she failed.)

•I demand as a Tonawanda citizen with a child at Fletcher School: Was my child exposed? If I find out this city has covered up the exposure of our children to radioactive or other hazardous waste, there is going to be heck to pay.

•This is for Mayor Roth and Mr. Swanick. I grew up and Hackett Drive. I have since married and live up on The Hill. As kids we played near and in Two Mile and Rattlesnake creeks. Why not open this subject up to anyone with a concern. How long has the uranium been there? What damage is it doing to us and has it done to us? Is there more of it there? Why not do a study of people with health problems who lived here and are still living here. We have numerous people with health problems on the hill who have turned up with health or fertility problems. Don't the rest of us who are living on the hill concern you?

•Hey Erie County, don't worry about the radioactive waste and uranium. Chuck Swanick got rid of the smokers and some businesses along with them. I think his priorities got mixed up.
